Martin uses his secondary school's Commodore PET to do his research and it is through that machine that he is contacted by the Foundation.

Schoolboy Martin is approached by an organisation called the Icarus Foundation and is invited to enrol in a school for gifted children. All seems well at first but Martin begins to be concerned that his skills are being used nefariously.
