A Russian spacecraft with a Russian crew and three American observers travels to Jupiter to investigate the remains of the spacecraft Discovery in a decaying orbit around Jupiters moon Io. They hope to ressurect the ship's computer, the HAL 9000, and discover what went wrong on the previous mission nine years earlier.
