An American Antarctic research team rescue a dog from a crazed group of Norwegian researchers, only to discover that it is in fact a shape-shifting alien intent on destruction.

The Apple II is disguised as a "Chess Wizard" computer that MacReady plays, destroying it by pouring a glass of whisky into it after the computer wins the match.
It's a mock up, and there's some unnecessary voice synthesis, but other than that the capabilities of the machine are realistic.
Blair uses the Superbrain to analyse samples from The Thing from which he estimates that it will take over the world in about three years.
