This is supposed to be the far distant future!
At least they used a computer that fit the design aesthetic of the movie, and also, at least the screen looks like the real Grid Compass used to instead of a crappy chromakey effect showing a fake screen

i find this example to be one of the most realistic use ever. As with most of James Cameron's films, the sense of realism and it-could-be-like-so feel, Aliens felt very real, even to date. Btw, I believe it wasn't that far ahead in time.

This and the use of (19)80s CCTV ruin an otherwise perfect movie!

I think it's actually still very fitting. while i realize we all know how small computers have gotten in phones and such, I also think there's something admirable about being a device with a very specific purpose there is no need for full color screens. even to this day we have lower tech in some situations because that's all that's needed to perform the task. minimal parts and complexities lead to greater reliability. So even in 2020 I don't find this to be a distraction from the movie. It looks very much like it belongs in that scene.

Automated gun control systems are very basic graphically for most functions and only display video feed via monitors or windows in graphical control systems. So this would be very realistic.
