I had my SMC 70 back when it was in "V", and it was the first computer with a Sony 3.5" drive. I also have the SMC70G, the genlocked version. It also had a ram card the same capacity of the 3.5" floppy. I pipped the floppy to the ram card which smoked the other computers at the time. When done, I would pip it back to the floppy. The first floppy had to be manually opened and closed. The second version was spring loaded and was manually opened, and all you had to was squeeze the corner of the disc and it automatically closed. The third version was auto open, auto closed. I had to upgrade my drives for this new function. This is the version used by other computer manufacturers. I still have all of my SMC 70 stuff which included printer and color monitor. The SMC wasn't just the first computer to use a 3.5" floppy, but also the first computer designed for color and was genlocked. I have all three versions of the floppy, and an amazing amount of software that was available back then.

These were awesome boxes! Trinitron color screen, real graphics, light pen, 3 inch drives, modular design.... Yet since they were CP/M we could not seem to give them away when the IBMs came out. In fact the store owner gave me the floor model with one of everything, hardware and software, just to get rid of it in 1985. I had an adapter for the monitor to use IBM CGA as well and used the monitor long after I let the computer go. Often regretted that as it was a real piece of history.
